2. addict vt. 使沉溺;使入迷 沉溺于;对有瘾 vi. 使人上瘾
用作及物动词时,常与介词to 搭配使用,即be addicted to… /addict oneself to…
He is addicted to drinking/gambling.
他嗜酒/赌博成癖。
She was addicted to poetry.
她醉心于诗歌。
He used to addict himself to drinking.
他以前一贯沉溺于酗酒。
Drugs are addicting.
麻醉品会使人上瘾。
3. remain vi. 剩下;继续存在;逗留;停留 link v. 保持,仍然是
Much work remains to be done.
还有许多工作要做。
The foreign guests remained in Beijing for two weeks.
外宾在北京逗留了两星期。
She remained unmarried.
她仍然没有结婚。
注意以下两种句式:
It remains to be proved that … 尚待证明的是……
Nothing remains but to do… 只要……就行了
4. attach vt. 附上;加上(to); 贴上;参加,加入(to);使依恋
attach(much/great ) importance/significance to …(十分/非常)重视……
It is unwise to attach too much importance to what he said.
过分重视他的话是不明智的。
attach a condition to his admission to the university
录取他进入大学附加一个条件
I was attached to the expedition as a medical adviser.
我作为医疗顾问参加了探险队。
We are much attached to each other.
我们之间感情深厚。
5. obtain vt. (正式)获得,得到;达到
vi. 通用;得到公认
obtain knowledge 获得知识
She obtained her degree in 1960.
她在1960年获得学位。
These books can be obtained from our library.
这些书能在我们的图书馆里借到。
The rules obtain for everyone.
这些规则适用于每一个人。
obtain属正式用语,在日常谈话中应以get取代,如 get some tickets for the ballet(买到几张芭蕾舞的票)之类的说法中,就不宜用obtain。
6. eager adj. 渴望的;热切的;急切的,敏锐的;凛冽的
He is eager for/after/about success.
他渴望成功。
He is very eager in his studies.
他热衷于学习。
An eager breeze ruffled the lake.
一股凛冽的微风吹皱一池湖水。
此外eager后接不定式,表渴望做某事;后接that从句,属正式用法,that从句应是虚拟。如:
He is eager to see his old mother.
他渴望见到老母亲。
She is eager that the boss give/should give her a three days’ leave.
她盼望老板能给她三天假期。
