1. discount  n.（可数；不可数）折扣；让头；减价
at a discount  打折
用discount 表示打折扣这个意思时，常用的搭配动词有allow, give, make等,如：
give no discount to the booksellers  对书商不打折扣
对某种东西打折扣，用介词on表示，如：
a discount on air fares 飞机票打折扣
对某事物的价格打折扣用介词off（有时也用on）表示，如：
make a discount of 10% off the fixed prices 照定价打九折
要表达多少百分比的折扣，有两种说法：百分比+discount和discount + of+百分比：
15% discount（八五折）, discount of 30%（七折）。
以某种折扣出售用介词at表示，如：
sell a radio at a 25% discount from the retail price
以零售价的七五折出售收音机
要表达得到折扣优惠这个意思时，可用动词get, receive等,如：
At some shops you can get discount.
在有些商店可享受优惠价。

2. sacrifice n.（可数；不可数）牺牲；牺牲品 vt. 作出牺牲；奉献出
用作名词时，常与介词at, for, of, to等搭配。at表示作出牺牲，付出代价；for表示为……作牺牲；of表示牺牲的对象或作祭品的东西；to表示向……供奉，向……献祭。
We achieved our success at great personal sacrifice.
我们作出了巨大的个人牺牲才取得成功。
Parents often make sacrifices for their children.
父母常常为他们的子女作出牺牲。
In past times many peoples made human sacrifices to their gods.
旧时有许多民族以人为祭品供奉他的神。 
用作动词时，常与介词for, to等搭配。
sacrifice one’s life for the country 为国捐躯
She has sacrificed herself to her husband’s interests and welfare.
她为了丈夫的利益和幸福做出了牺牲了。

3. beyond  prep.（场所）超过，在……那边；（时间）晚了，过了；（范围）超过，为……所不及； 高于，胜过 
beyond praise  赞美不尽
beyond compare/comparison  无可比拟
beyond question  毫无疑问；一定
He lives beyond the sea.
他住在大海彼岸。
They stayed beyond the time limit.
他们停留的时间超过了规定的时间。
The book is beyond me.
这本书太深了，我看不懂。
Harry is far beyond his brother in Latin.
哈里的拉丁文比他的兄弟好多了。

4. overtake  vt. & vi. 超过，赶上；突然袭击，突然发生于；打跨
be overtaken by a storm   遭到暴风雨袭击
be overtaken by/with surprise/terror 忽然感到惊讶/恐怖
A car overtook me although I was going fast.
我虽然开得很快，还是被一辆车超过了。
Changes have overtaken the town recently
市镇上最近突然发生了变化
The murderer was overtaken in his crime.
杀人犯当场被捕。

5. release vt. 释放，解放；放松，解开；解除，免除；发布，发行
He was released from prison after serving his sentence.
他刑满释放。
The driver started the engine, released the brake, and was on his way.
司机发动了引擎，松开了刹车，开车上路了。
He is released at five o’clock.
他5点钟就下班了。
The new film will be released next month.
这部新电影下月发行。
The new trade figures have just been released.
新的贸易统计数字刚刚发布。

6. dismiss vt. 解雇（常用被动），免……的职；解散，打发；不加考虑；置之不理
be dismissed for   因……而被解雇
If you are late again, you’ll be dismissed (from your job).
如果你再迟到，你将被解雇。
dismiss a class/ a meeting   宣布下课/散会
He dismissed us with a wave of his hand.
他把手一挥让我们离开。
He dismissed the unpleasant subject and talked about something else.
他不谈论这个令人不愉快的话题，而去谈论别的事情。
注意：在口语中，dismiss oneself有时可作“自己提出不干”的意思，其主体通常是雇员或仆人等，如：
He has dismissed himself and gone.
他已提出不干，而且走了。
